Holy Week in the city of Leon is the most important event on the calendar of festivities and celebrations. It is such an important event and has such an impact on local tourism that it was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
Unlike in other cities, Holy Week in Leon has the particularity of being celebrated for 10 days from Friday of Dolores to Easter Sunday.
Monumental processions are carried out at the command of 16 brotherhoods made up of several thousand "papones", an exclusive term given to the brothers from Leon.
In addition to the papones, these processions are accompanied by the various secular boards that comprise life in Leon, such as the Mayor Board of Holy Week in Leon and the Camino La Antigua, among others.
One of the enormously popular acts that take place during Holy Week is “La Ronda”, in which Calvary is recreated in an incredible and dramatic way.
During the processions, the streets of Leon are packed with many faithful and devotees but also with countless tourists who admire the highly elaborate and richly decorated ceremonies.
