Leon is the capital of the homonymous province of the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon, whose foundation dates back to the year 29 BC, when it served as a Roman military camp.
Over the centuries, Leon was nourished by a rich Roman, Hebrew and Muslim heritage that shaped a diverse heritage. Thus, Leon is an important tourist epicentre, with a number of interesting and popular thematic routes.
Among the most important are the Jewish Route, where one can admire the ruins of the old aljama, some porticos and the exotic facades. Likewise, the Roman Route offers a walk through the ancient Roman fortifications that still stand, such as the Wall of the Cubes and the Opus Caementicium wall.
The Leon of the Barrio Romántico Route offers a look at buildings that contain medieval and avant-garde traces and that are considered among the most important recreational leisure areas in Leon.
The Leon of the Way of St. James Route is a pilgrim route that crosses the city of Leon towards Santiago de Compostela. It hosts a large number of tourists and believers every year.
Other very popular routes are the Route of the Wet Leon, where one can appreciate traditional Leon architecture and many restaurants; the Green Leon Route, which is ideal for ecotourists, with a tour of the natural beauty around the city; and the Vela Zanetti Murals Route, where one can admire the murals painted by this famous artist exiled in Leon between 1963 and 1972.
