Holy Week

In Zaragoza, Holy Week acquires special importance due to the more than 50 processions that involve various brotherhoods in a spectacular ceremony full of ornaments, traditional clothing and interesting paraphernalia of enormous tradition and heritage.

This tradition dates back to the 13th century, when the Brotherhood of the Blood of Christ appeared, the oldest in the city. However, the current aesthetic of Holy Week in Zaragoza dates back to 1936.
 
The General Procession of the Holy Burial was the first procession held in the city, in the year 1617. Currently, the Procession of the Holy Burial is carried out with the participation of 25 brotherhoods. This procession leaves every Good Friday from the Church of St. Elizabeth of Portugal.

Holy Week in Zaragoza has been declared of International Tourist Interest.
 
 

Festival of the Pillar

The Festival of the Pillar is one of the most popular and important celebrations in Zaragoza.

The big day is celebrated on October 12, the day of Our Lady of the Pillar and the national holiday of Spain and Hispanic heritage.

This conjunction of dates makes the celebration an event that unites both religious fervour and liveliness.
 
The festivities span 10 days during which endless activities and events of enormous heritage importance take place. They are immensely popular among citizens of Zaragoza and especially among tourists, who crowd the streets in the middle of a spectacular celebration that brings together up to four million attendees.

Among the events that take place during this joyful festival are the Solemn Mass of Infants, the glamorous Offering of Flowers, a Pontifical Mass, the Offering of Fruits, the world-famous Crystal Rosary Parade, the huge comparsa with big heads and giants, and the announcement of the Proclamation.

Due to the immense popularity of this festival, it was declared a Festival of National and International Tourist Interest.
