Festivals in Seville

As in many other cities in Spain, Holy Week in Seville is an event of enormous importance, not only on a religious level, but also because it is a highly popular tourist attraction. This fact has earned it the declaration of Festival of National and International Tourist Interest.

The celebration is characterized by spectacular processions led by the brotherhoods, each with its typical costumes, ceremonies and social, artistic and historical factors that give them a unique attraction.
 

The famous acts of the Station of Penance accompany them. These celebrations range from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, on which splendid images are paraded around and the most dramatic events of the Passion of Christ are staged, accompanied by bearers and the penitent procession.

It is a tradition so deeply rooted in the people that there are currently about 60 very popular brotherhoods—among them the Gran Poder, the Gitanos, the Esperanza de Triana and the Esperanza Macarena. All of them take part in the procession accompanied by the singing of “saetas” from balconies and windows.
 

The April Fair is a lively and popular festival that takes place in Seville during the spring (one or two weeks after Holy Week) in a large venue called “Real de la Feria”.

The fair includes a number of booths of various sizes where visitors can enjoy gastronomic tastings, games and a series of activities.

In addition to the booths and all the ceremonies, the fair offers a park with more than 400 attractions.
 

It is known as “Calle del Infierno” and has been an essential part of the fair since its creation.

This popular festival began in 1847 when the proposal for an annual fair in the city was approved. Since then, the fair has amassed characteristic elements, among them flamenco dresses, horses with carriages, dances, typical gastronomy and drinks of Seville and picturesque bullfights, with a spectacular closing of fireworks.

Due to its picturesque, local and unique style, the Seville April Fair has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
