The Great Week of Santander is celebrated around July 25 in honour of St. James the Great, the patron saint of Spain. Over time, it has become a huge tourist attraction.
Like many festivals with a long tradition, the Great Week is carried out with an elaborate ceremony that includes the launching of the “chupinazo”, a small rocket in City Hall Square. This announces the beginning of the great celebration in the middle of a crowd with blue handkerchiefs, as well as big heads that liven up the event.
The Great Week is a celebration of great intensity where many activities take place, whether folkloric, cultural or recreational. These include the popular Day Fair in which dozens of food stalls offer exquisite gastronomic tastings throughout the city.
This popular festival includes parades, children's activities, theatre performances and the famous Santiago Bullfighting Fair in the Cuatro Caminos bullring, considered one of the most prestigious and important in all of Spain.
