University of Salamanca

University of Salamanca

Of all the places in Castile and León, without a doubt, the University of Salamanca is the most important because it is the oldest university in Spain and the third oldest in all of Europe. This made Salamanca the oldest and most traditional centre of knowledge in Spain for more than 500 years.

Founded between 1208 and 1214, the University of Salamanca was the first educational institution in Europe to receive the title of university. Its origin stemmed from the cathedral schools, where the main European libraries used to be housed.

The university architectural complex is impressive and became the national reference over several centuries, especially during the 17th century, when the Spanish Golden Age developed. However, it fell into decline and decay after the 18th century due to conflicts and political instability.

In 1951, an ambitious plan was carried out to return it to its full autonomy on the occasion of the seventh centenary of its founding. This plan helped with its modernization and institutional and pedagogical revitalization.

Among the most interesting architectural aspects of the university is its splendid Courtyard of the Minor Schools, a beautiful building that housed what was called the minor educations, where high school studies were taught. Constructed in 1428, the building stands out for its splendid porticoed façade, whose entrance has two semicircular arches that rest on a beautiful Corinthian-style capital column.

Both the university and its lower schoolyard have become major attractions for tourists, academics and students.
