Of all the historic private residences in Salamanca, one of the most popular is the House-Museum, which served as the residence of the famous writer Miguel de Unamuno. He lived there between 1900 and 1914, when he served as Rector of the University of Salamanca, Presently, it has been integrated into the Archives and Library Service of this study house.
It is an imposing two-story rectangular building constructed between 1758 and 1762—the work of the famous architect Andrés García de Quiñones. Unamuno lived here as rector and wrote many of his novels and poems.
On the ground floor is the Official Hall, which served as the university's study cloister and currently serves as the Music Chair. The upper floor was dedicated entirely to Unamuno's home.
Located in the right wing of the old Senior School, the Unamuno House-Museum has not only the writer's personal belongings but also his spectacular library made up of more than 6,000 volumes.
Starting in 1952, a series of renovations was carried out to adapt the house to use as a house-museum. This was done by adding furniture and modernizing its common areas. Finally, in 1996, it opened its doors to the public, thus becoming one of the most prominent museum institutions in the city, especially among academics and students.
