Plaza Mayor of Salamanca

Plaza Mayor of Salamanca

The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca is an authentic architectural treasure in the heart of the city. It exudes history, culture and beauty at every step. This iconic public space, known as one of the most impressive in the country, is a must-see destination for all lovers of travel and architecture.

It was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style and is recognized as a masterpiece of Spanish architecture. Its symmetrical design and elegant three-story galleries make this square a truly unique place. Each façade is adorned with wrought iron balconies and semicircular arches that give the feeling of being in an authentic open-air museum.

The heart of the square is the statue of Philip IV on horseback—a sculpture that pays homage to the king who granted "Royal" status to Salamanca. The artistic details and sculptures that adorn the square are a delight for the senses, and visitors cannot resist photographing this impressive work of urban art. Built between 1729 and 1756 on an area of almost 6,500 square meters, the Plaza Mayor has the particularity of having an irregular quadrilateral shape, with none of its facades measuring the same. There are 88 semicircular arches with medallions representing important personalities.

Over the centuries, the square underwent a series of changes, modifications and restorations to adapt to urban and topographic changes, especially those related to its unevenness. These changes—including additions such as its beautiful granite pavement—preserved its beauty and splendour.

The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca is much more than a beautiful square; it is the epicentre of local life. The surrounding cafes, restaurants and shops offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy delicious local cuisine and purchase unique souvenirs. Plus, it's a place where culture comes to life with year-round cultural events and activities, like outdoor concerts and craft fairs.

The place is also a testament to the city's rich history, having been the scene of important events over the centuries. It is a meeting and celebration space for locals and a perfect starting point to explore the treasures that Salamanca has to offer, such as its famous university and its cathedral.

Given its beauty and heritage importance, the Plaza Mayor was declared a National Monument and a Historical-Artistic Monument.
