Convent of Saint Stephen (Salamanca)

Convent of Saint Stephen (Salamanca)

In Concilio de Trento Square is the Convent of Saint Stephen of the Dominican order, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Its design and execution were the work of important architects and artists such as Fray Martín de Santiago, Juan Rivero de Rada and Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón.

The architectural complex stands out because, although it is considered to be in the classic Plateresque style, it has an interesting mix of architectural styles, including late Gothic and Baroque.

Its façade has an access porch to the convent and a doorway to the church, which is considered one of the most beautiful within the Plateresque. It was conceived as a doorway-altarpiece that forms a triumphal arch with a highly decorated half-barrel vault. The portico of the façade is made up of semicircular arches in the Italian Renaissance style; its decorative austerity stands out. It is the work of Rivero de Rada.

The convent church has a classic Latin cross design with a single nave, an elevated choir on a segmental-style arch and chapels located between buttresses, all within a late Gothic style. It includes the imposing painting "The Triumph of the Church" by Antonio Palomino, as well as "Virgin and Child" by Peter Paul Rubens.

Other notable elements of this convent are its splendid main altarpiece created by José Benito de Churriguera, the beautiful sacristy of Fray Pedro de Herrera Suárez, the Gothic and Renaissance cloister by Fray Martín de Santiago and the unique and revolutionary "Escalera de Soto", created by Gil de Hontañón.
