Considered the most important museum institution in the Principality of Asturias, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias occupies the headquarters of three of the most important historical and monumental buildings in the city: the Oviedo-Portal House, the Velarde Palace and the extension of the Solís-Carbajal House.
The initial collection of the museum, which opened in May 1980, consisted of art belonging to the Provincial Council of Oviedo. Little by little, more works of art were added until the impressive figure of almost 15,000 works was reached. This collection is made up of paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures and industrial art, both Spanish and foreign.
Among the impressive collection of works, artists such as Goya, Picasso, El Greco, José de Ribera and Umberto Pettinicchio stand out. There is also an important representation of Flemish, Italian and contemporary artists, as well as beautiful relics made of glass and photographs from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Because Roman and Medieval archaeological ruins were found in the museum area, it underwent almost nine years of renovations to expand its physical area, which is now almost 8,000 square meters. The museum reopened in 2015.
In addition to its extraordinary artistic, cultural and archaeological heritage, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias has traveling exhibition areas, as well as rooms for workshops, conferences and audiovisual events of enormous appeal and quality.
The Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias is considered one of the most modern and popular in Europe, enjoying enormous appeal among academics and students.
