Escandalera Square is located in the Historic Centre of Oviedo, in an area considered the commercial centre of the city. This means it is a busy area with a large influx of tourists.
Thanks to its rectangular shape, the square borders some of the main streets of Oviedo.
Like other places of great antiquity in Oviedo, the square has had different names over the centuries depending on the historical moment. For example, it has been called March 27th Square, Republic Square and General Ordóñez Square, among others. The popular name of Escandalera Square was adopted due to the violent demonstrations that occurred in the 19th century, especially in 1881.
Due to its central location, the square is surrounded by important administrative buildings, as well as heritage monuments of great historical, cultural and idiosyncratic interest in Oviedo.
Among the most notable places are Thermometer House, Conde House, the famous building belonging to the Caja de Ahorros de Asturias, the imposing building of the Social Security Treasury and especially the spectacular and imposing headquarters of the Palace of the General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias, among many others.
In addition, Escandalera Square has become a natural meeting point, which is why it has been gaining attention over the years from tourists and visitors.
