Saint Michael Market (Madrid)

Saint Michael Market (Madrid)

Saint Michael Market is located in the homonymous square, next to the Plaza Mayor in Madrid. With two floors and an area of about 1,200 square meters, it is one of the most popular meeting points in the Spanish capital. It has the particularity of preserving intact its original iron structure from the beginning of the 20th century.

Inaugurated in 1916, the market has a conventional architectural design. It has a rectangular floor plan whose major axes are oriented east-west. It also has an opening for natural light thanks to its iron and glass design. The building's two floors are distributed over an area of nearly 2,000 square meters each. The premises and common areas are distributed comfortably and fluidly.

In the past, the Saint Michael Market premises were organized along nine alleys in the upper area, though these premises have since been converted into bars and rooms with high tables.

In addition to the bars, Saint Michael Market is considered an authentic temple of Madrid gastronomy thanks to its stores, where you can buy some of the best ingredients and spices—among them Iberian ham, fresh seafood brought directly from Galicia, Mediterranean rice and products from Asturias and the Basque Country.

After almost 100 years as a food market, the Saint Michael Market became the first gastronomic market in Spain in 2009. In 2018, it had established itself as one of the most important gastronomy centres in Europe, with more than 10 million visitors each year.
