Every year, around May 15, a spectacular celebration of enormous popular roots—i.e., the Festival of St. Isidore—takes place in Madrid to honour St. Isidore the Farmer, the patron saint of the city.
Over time, this celebration, which at first was entirely ecclesiastical, has become an authentic popular festival characterized by a series of highly attractive events such as open-air festivals and gastronomic tastings, regional dances, bullfighting fairs, competitive sports and a variety of other festivities.
One of the great traditions is eating in the surroundings of the meadow and drinking water from the nearby hermitage.
Walks around the hermitage have become authentic gastronomic events of enormous quality and international reputation due to the exquisite delicacies typical of Madrid's culinary art—among them, fried chicken, “entresijos” and traditional sweet wine.
It is also traditional to dance a “chotis” and buy “rosquillas” in one of the many fair stalls.
