Oriente Square is located in the historic centre of Madrid and is one of the largest and most impressive monumental squares in the city.
The monumental design of the square—the work of the famous architect Narciso Pascual Colomer, who presented it in 1844—is rectangular in shape, with a curved head on land previously occupied by medieval houses.
The imposing square is dominated by two magnificent buildings: the Royal Palace in its western sector and the Royal Theatre at the eastern end. At the same time, to the north, you can see the Monastery of the Incarnation. Oriente Square is one of the most attractive and interesting meeting places in Madrid. This is due to its beautiful architecture, with marvellous central gardens and ideal spaces for walking, and to the impressive artistic wealth that exists along its length.
Among the most striking is the monumental effigy on horseback of Philip IV—the work of Pietro Tacca. It is considered the first equestrian statue in the world in which the steed appears supported only on its hind legs.
Also notable is an impressive sculptural group representing all the Spanish monarchs of antiquity. These 20 beautiful sculptures, all made of limestone and distributed in two rows on both sides of the central gardens, show the five kings of the Visigoth period and the 15 subsequent Spanish monarchs who ruled until the Reconquest.
In addition to its historical and heritage value, Oriente Square is a magnificent tourist destination because it is surrounded by many commercial establishments, important avenues, and countless museums, bars and restaurants.
