The National Library of Madrid is located in the splendid Palacio de Biblioteca y Museos Nacionales, a Neoclassical-style building on Paseo de Recoletos that also houses the National Archaeological Museum.
The building, located on the land of an old "hacienda," was constructed from 1866 to 1896, when it was inaugurated. During that period, the original design underwent modifications to adapt it to its needs and the change in the urban profile.
Its façade follows a traditional design, with a doorway with a Doric colonnade at its entrance and an Ionic colonnade located on the balcony on the upper floor. To enhance its cultural and pedagogical importance, a splendid reproduction of the Altamira Cave was designed in the access garden.
A year before its inauguration, in 1895, the National Archaeological Museum installed its magnificent collection inside the building to further enrich the splendid collection of books, magazines and various publications already stored inside the library.
The architectural complex of the National Library required important renovations and restructuring between 1968 and 1981 with the aim of expanding its spaces, converting the three original floors into five and reinstalling the immense collection according to modernized museum concepts.
Currently, the National Library of Madrid is completely modernized and adapted to the new digital age while retaining its splendid and exquisite Neoclassical architectural style.
