Gran Vía (Madrid)

Gran Vía (Madrid)

The Gran Vía is one of the main avenues of great width and length in Madrid (hence, its name). It starts from Alcalá Street and ends at Spain Square. It is one of the most important landmarks of the Spanish capital on the tourist, cultural, commercial, recreational and residential levels.

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Gran Vía was characterized by its magnificence and breadth. It became a road artery that easily and simply connected the main points of the city.

Currently, the Gran Vía accommodates more limited traffic because it includes more space for pedestrians, with the intention of forming a huge boulevard where tourists and pedestrians can have more comfortable access to restaurants, bars, commercial premises and especially cinemas and theatres that have been increasing in number in recent years.

Another reason the Gran Vía has gained immense popularity is its length, which has allowed large international fashion houses to take over entire blocks, especially in the stretch from San Luis Street to Callao Square. It rivals other world-famous avenues such as Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles.

Finally, the Gran Vía is a key arterial road with an important residential area and a pedestrian design for recreation. Madrid residents can walk there with their families, as can tourists, who can enjoy the countless bars and restaurants.
