Thyssen Bornemisza Museum (Madrid)

Thyssen Bornemisza Museum (Madrid)

The Thyssen Bornemisza Museum is located between Carrera de San Jerónimo and Paseo del Prado. Its headquarters is the splendid Villahermosa Palace, a spectacular building from the 18th century. The museum is considered one of the most prestigious in Spain.

The museum's origins are closely linked to the lavish palace. A series of wealthy Madrid nobles lived there, sharing a taste for fine arts, excellent Neoclassical decoration and, especially, the palace's beautiful halls for dances and parties.

Many years later, in 1973, the palace became the headquarters of a banking institution. In 1980, the state acquired the property and undertook a thorough restoration and remodelling so that the building could serve as a museum.

The renovations recovered the palace’s large rooms, arranged around a circular atrium, and large skylights to take advantage of natural light.

Other details of interest are the beautiful marble floors and exquisite toasted stucco walls, as well as a colourful setting where beautiful canvases and spectacular tapestries are displayed.

Immediately after its inauguration in 1992, the museum received an immense original collection. In 2004, it was expanded to house the rest of Carmen Thyssen Bornemisza's collection. Due to this spectacular collection of art and the beauty of the palace, the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum has become one of the most popular art galleries in Madrid.
