The Reina Sofía Art Centre Museum is a prestigious institution that opened in 1992. It specializes in 20th-century and contemporary art and is one of the most visited museums in the world.
The headquarters of the museum, located in Atocha, is in a monumental Neoclassical-style building that once belonged to the former General Hospital of Madrid, known as the Sabatini Building in honour of the famous Italian architect Francesco Sabatini and dating back to the 18th century.
This splendid museum's popularity stems from its location in the so-called Madrid Art Triangle, which includes the city's other important museums: the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Prado Museum. These museums form part of the famous "Landscape of Light," which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.
In addition to its privileged location, the museum enjoys well-deserved fame due to its spectacular collection of pieces, which includes works by world-renowned artists—Miró, Dalí, Picasso, Magritte, Tanguy, Picabia, Gris, Blanchard, Delaunay, Braque, Bacon and Leger—who left a deep mark on 20th-century art.
In addition to its impressive permanent exhibition, since its inauguration in 1992, the Reina Sofía Museum has hosted many travelling exhibitions of great importance. It has been increasing its excellent collection of works over the years, which is why, in 2016, it was able to record the spectacular figure of almost four million visitors—a historical record in Spain.
