Platform 0 is the name given to the enormous network of interpretation centres of the Madrid Metro that currently function as museum institutions. The first is the Pacific Engine Shed, and the second is what was once the Chamberí Station. It also includes exhibition areas at the Pacífico, Chamartín, Carpetana and Ópera stations.
Platform 0, whose construction began in the 1920s, is closely related to Madrid's history because the Metro represented a new and innovative means of communication that quickly became an integral part of Madrid. That is why it is so important at an informative and pedagogical level.
The Madrid City Council, together with the Madrid Metro, decided to transform the old Chamberí Station and the Pacific Engine Shed into a modern Interpretation Centre. After a profound restoration, the centre was inaugurated to the public in 2008.
The exhibition spaces are particularly interesting, as visitors can see first-hand what the original machinery that provided electricity to the trains in the Pacific Engine Shed looked like. Likewise, Platform 0 offers a tour of what the original stations were like at the beginning of the century, including the lobbies and their interesting and curious advertisements made of porcelain.
An interesting aspect of Platform 0 is that remains of the old Caños del Peral Fountain and the old Amaniel Aqueduct were discovered at the Ópera Station, as were paleontological remains at the Carpetana Station.
Since its inauguration, Platform 0 has been considered one of the most interesting and popular museum institutions in Madrid, receiving close to a million visitors annually.
