The Museum of America is located on Reyes Católicos Avenue, within the Complutense University of Madrid. Its houses American ethnographic, artistic and archaeological pieces and relics, which until 1941 were stored in the National Archaeological Museum.
One of the great attractions of the museum is its location in an area surrounded by nature on the university campus. This further elevates the symbolism of the links between Spain and its American colonies. In addition, the museum is close to the Institute of Hispanic Culture and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
The museum houses an incredible collection of more than 25,000 pieces, works and relics that chronologically cover all historical periods from the Palaeolithic to the present. Here, you can see beautiful pre-Columbian pieces, as well as works by the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas, along with a sample of colonial works of art.
In addition to the pieces of American origin, the museum has several collections from regions and countries outside the American continent. These include a xylotheque and a valuable collection of natural history from the Philippines, Oceania and Africa, and even a select and valuable collection of Lappish objects called "samis."
As a curious fact, the only American pieces that are not preserved in the Museum of America are in the important numismatic collection, which is distributed between the Reina Sofía Art Centre Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.
