Madrid Wax Museum

Of all the museum institutions in Madrid, one of the most popular and entertaining is undoubtedly its attractive Wax Museum, located on Paseo de Recoletos. Since its inauguration in 1972, it has become a mandatory stop for tourists.

Not only is the museum made up of spectacular and detailed reproductions of the characters, but it has carefully reconstructed the settings where said characters existed, all thanks to an extraordinary team of art directors, makeup artists and costume designers, some of them Oscar winners.

The first figure to be reproduced was that of Christopher Columbus. Many other famous figures followed, including Picasso, Ramón y Cajal, countless monarchs and heads of state such as Philip IV, Franco and Barack Obama, artists and showbiz celebrities, such as Lina Morgan and Elvis Presley, and even fictional characters such as Dracula, Harry Potter and Mortadelo and Filemón.

Over more than 50 years, the museum has increased its collection to more than 400 figures, all of them in their natural settings. The museum's enormous popularity has led to the creation of fantasy, crime and horror conceptual rooms that appeal to adults and children.

In addition to its many wax figures, the museum offers interactive attractions that include icy tunnel simulators, passageways to the centre of the Earth and space, a terrifying train that transports visitors through a Jurassic park inspired by Steven Spielberg's film and a multi-vision system where the History of Spain is shown.
