The Hermitage of Saint Anthony of la Florida is located in the homonymous square in the Moncloa-Aravaca district on the outskirts of Madrid. It is of great heritage importance because it is considered the only surviving hermitage of the three that existed in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua.
Of note is that the name of this hermitage should be plural, as there are two aspects to it. The first exhibits excellent murals made by the great artist Francisco de Goya. It is currently the artist's personal pantheon and a popular museum. The second is reserved for religious worship.
The area where the issue is located has been very popular since the 19th century because the famous festival of Saint Anthony of la Florida is celebrated in its vicinity at the beginning of June. This festival brings together a large number of tourists and parishioners.
This twin Hermitage of Saint Anthony of la Florida, as well as those of the Virgen del Puerto and of Saint Isidore the Labourer, are the only hermitages still preserved in Madrid.
In 1929, the twin hermitage (that is, the second aspect) was built. From then on, religious worship was celebrated there exclusively, leaving the original as a museum and an integral aspect of national heritage. It has been under the administration of the Madrid City Council since 1987.
Due to its heritage importance, its enormous artistic wealth and its beauty, the exotic Hermitage of Saint Anthony of la Florida was declared a National Monument in April 1905 and is considered one of the many cultural treasures in Madrid.
