Church of Saint Martin of Tours (Madrid)

The Church of Saint Martin of Tours is located on Desengaño Street in front of Santa María de la Soledad Torres Acosta Square. Due to its strategic location near Callao Square and Gran Vía, it is one of the most popular monumental temples in Madrid.

The church’s architectural design corresponds to the Baroque style that prevailed in 17th-century Madrid. Courtiers congregated there, and the influence of the famous architects Francisco Bautista and Pedro de la Torre is evident.

The construction, with a two-section façade and triangular pediment, has a Latin cross plan, side chapels, and a shallow transept, unlike its presbytery. Its transept, with an intersection covered by a blind vault, has an outward spire supported on pendentives.

The interior of the temple is austere and simple, but it displays the Baroque style and has a number of richly elaborate details—among them the corbels that support the pilasters, the cornice, and the beautiful tribunes that are shaped like balconies and that overlook the ship.

Although much of its original furniture has disappeared, some interesting pieces survive. Among them is its main altar, richly decorated with a Neo-Renaissance-style altarpiece. It is presided over by a beautiful relief of Saint Martin of Tours as well as other altarpieces and images distributed throughout the chapels.

It is one of the most famous and recognized Baroque temples in Madrid. Thanks to its immense heritage and artistic and historical value, it was declared a Monument of Cultural Interest in 1995.
