Girona Flower Festival

Festivals in Girona

Festival of Flowers

Initiated in 1955 and held in May, the Festival of Flowers is a celebration with a high tourist impact.

Its function is to promote the immense and spectacular production of beautiful flowers in Girona, which is why it also has an important commercial component.

Initially, it was a simple flower exhibition held in the Church of St. Dominic in Girona.

However, over the years, it evolved into a true festival of international importance that attracted not only tourists but also experts in gardening and growing flowers.

The development of the festival is such that in the Old Quarter of Girona, many owners offer mini-exhibitions of beautiful and interesting floral creations of great complexity.

This is an interesting initiative that, over time, has gained enormous popularity. The city literally flourishes in an incomparable splendour of hospitality and beauty. Tourists are fascinated by the conceptions and floral developments, some of them very much appreciated by international experts.

Fires de Sant Narcís

The Fires de Sant Narcís, or the Fairs of St. Narcissus, take place the week in which October 29 falls. They are celebrated in honour of St. Narcissus, the patron saint of Girona, and begin the Friday before that date with the appearance of parades and the reading from the top of the balcony of the Town Hall at the hands of the town crier appointed that year.

The day begins with a solemn mass in the Basilica of Sant Feliu in Girona, in whose chapel, according to tradition, the remains of the saint rest.

The celebration ends with fireworks on the Sunday after October 29. In addition to the liturgical ceremonial, the Fires de Sant Narcís has become an opportunity to celebrate a series of playful and recreational events of enormous tourist attraction, especially in the local barraques, where musical events, dances, an important agricultural fair, gastronomic tastings and other similar activities take place.
