The Cathedral of Girona is one of the most emblematic and visited monuments of the city. It is located at the highest point of the city and has a history that goes back more than a thousand years.
It is built on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the 11th century and combines several architectural styles, with the predominant one being Gothic. Its main façade is a true masterpiece of Baroque style, which is divided into three bodies like a richly decorated altarpiece, creating a sculptural group representing biblical scenes and religious figures.
Upon entering the interior of the cathedral, visitors are impressed by the majesty of its central nave, which is covered by ribbed vaults. Architectural details, such as rose windows and stained glass, illuminate the space with multicoloured light, creating an atmosphere of serenity and beauty.
One of the highlights is the famous Gothic nave, which is the widest in the world, with a width of almost 23 meters. This impressive work is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of medieval builders. Its Romanesque cloister from the 12th century, the work of the sculptor Arnau Cadell, is another element that cannot be missed, as it is one of the most interesting cloisters in Catalonia.
The artistic heritage of the cathedral is also of great importance. Among the numerous chapels and altars are works by prominent artists, such as the altarpiece of the main altar, made by Master Bartomeu between 1320 and 1357, and the Tapestry of Creation, a jewel from the 11th century.
In addition to its impressive architecture and works of art, the Cathedral of Girona has religious and cultural significance for the local community. It is the place where the main religious festivities of the city are celebrated.
