In addition to being the entrance to the monumental city, the Main Square of Caceres is considered a natural meeting point because it is surrounded by several monuments and heritage sites, as well as bars, restaurants and shops of great interest to tourists.
Its origins date back to the 14th century when it was a simple rectangular and slightly elevated plot surrounded by the Church of St. James and a group of neighbouring houses. This made it an ideal place to organize markets, fairs and recreational events. With the passing of the years, it became the Main Square.
Around it are very important institutions such as the Town Hall, churches, hermitages and many restaurants, bars and places of great tourist interest. Many of them date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and although some have undergone reforms and restored, they are splendidly preserved.
In 2011, the Main Square underwent an ambitious remodelling and redevelopment with the aim of creating modern recreational and leisure spaces that could be used for events, concerts, meetings, fairs or any other important activity.
All this has made the Main Square one of the most interesting and visited points in the city and an authentic oasis for tourists to enjoy.
