The Arco de la Estrella is located next to Bujaco Tower, at a point where, at one point, a door gave access to the Main Square. This was the main door of the walled enclosure protecting the medieval city of Caceres in the 15th century.
It is considered one of the oldest and most interesting heritage treasures in Caceres. Its current design was a remodelling carried out by Manuel de Lara Churriguera in 1726 by order of Bernardino de Carvajal Moctezuma. The intention was that it would serve as a direct and more comfortable access for carriages to the palace next to the tower. To achieve the current design, Churriguera had to tear down the old door and create a new one with an oblique shape.
The Arco de la Estrella presents various ornaments typical of its noble status. The arch is crowned by the heraldry of Caceres on its outside. Inside is a temple with a representation of Our Lady of the Star, from which the gate gets its name.
An interesting detail about this construction is the beautiful star-shaped lantern that illuminates the image of the Virgin. Below it, one can see the stone heraldry of the Carvajal family.
