Located in the central district of Palma de Mallorca, Main Square is one of the most important places in the city. It is surrounded by important monumental works such as the Church of St. Michael and the splendid Municipal Theatre and is very close to the Town Hall and the Church of St. Eulalia.
The immense plot that Main Square occupies was the ancient and monumental Convent of St. Philip Neri in addition to several surrounding properties and the headquarters of the Inquisition until 1823. After the confiscation and the elimination of the Inquisition, 10 years passed before the decision was made to build a porticoed square in its place in 1833.
By 1838, the first wing of the square had been completed. The rest of the work continued over several decades until the construction, which included modern underground parking and a series of commercial galleries, was completed in the mid-20th century.
Typically rectangular in plan, Palma de Mallorca's porticoed Main Square is surrounded by three- and four-story buildings that offer multiple entrances and exits.
Among these buildings is “El Águila”, which shares a unique metal structure in its lower body with Can Rey Street and some Catalan Modernist-style buildings created at the beginning of the 20th century with beautiful decorations on their facades. Highlights include the exquisite polychrome ceramics made in “La Roqueta”, an emblematic Mallorcan factory.
