Cort Square is one of the most emblematic locations in Palma de Mallorca because the Town Hall is located around it and also because it is where residents traditionally gather to celebrate the arrival of the new year.
This popular square, with an irregular layout and whose name refers to the old feudal court that met there, occupies a huge area between Cadena, Colom and Palau Reiai Streets. Over time, they have been moulded around the square and its asymmetrical shape.
One of the most notable and recognizable elements of the square is its 600-year-old centenary olive tree known as Olivera de Cort, considered a symbol of peace by the locals. It was planted in the square at the end of the 20th century.
In Cort Square, the popular and attractive Festa de l'Estandard is celebrated. It takes place every December 31 to commemorate the triumphant arrival of Jaime I and his troops during the 13th century, when they defeated and expelled the Muslims.
In addition to being a central place with a significant tradition and institutional and urban importance, Cort Square is a meeting place par excellence because it is surrounded by several of the most important hotels in Palma de Mallorca, as well as exquisite restaurants, commercial shops, cafes and a variety of service establishments.
