The Sacromonte Quarter, together with the Alhambra and the Albaicin Quarter, is one of the most emblematic places in the city.
This picturesque neighbourhood owes much of its fame and popularity to its dwellings, located in caves whose origin dates back to the 16th century. After the reconquest, the Muslim and Jewish population was expelled from Granada and, with the passage of time, the gypsy population, which is characterized by being nomads.
Sacromonte has an idyllic atmosphere preserving a traditional urban centre that seems to be frozen in time, characterized by the gypsy suburb.
The neighbourhood has a large number of places of immense artistic, cultural and heritage interest. Among them is the Caves of Sacromonte Museum, which offers a detailed and global vision of the lifestyle of the 16th century.
Without a doubt, the most important monument is Sacromonte Abbey, built during the 17th century under the command of Don Pedro de Castro. Inside are relics belonging to the first Christians who settled in Granada around the first century.
Due to its splendour, beauty and tranquillity, the Sacromonte Quarter is highly visited by tourists.
