The St. Nicholas Viewpoint is one of the simplest and quietest places in Granada, yet it is also very popular. The viewpoint is a plain that offers spectacular views of the city and its surroundings, especially the Alhambra, with sunsets that have turned it into a legendary site.
Located in the Albaicín Quarter, the St. Nicholas Viewpoint is at the top of the Alcazaba Qadima de los Ziries, next to the Church of St. Nicholas, from which its name comes.
Originally, this viewpoint was a meeting point and parade ground. In ancient times, it was not a plain, and in its place were Arab palaces situated there due to its strategic position. According to popular belief, it was the site of the official capitulation of the Arabs before the Catholic Monarchs in 1492.
Not until the arrival of the 19th century was this enormous area cleared and flattened, adopting its square shape. The aim was to turn it into a viewpoint with benches made of stone, a beautiful tree line and characteristic Granada-style cobblestones.
Among the most characteristic features of its architectural design is the ornamental stone cross located in the centre and placed there during the 1930s.
It is an eclectic, iconoclastic, exotic place full of energy thanks to the large number of musicians, artisans and vendors who can be found in its surroundings. They have turned the St. Nicholas Viewpoint into an authentic meeting point for tourists.
