The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, inaugurated in November 1995 and popularly known by its acronym MACBA, is dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. This makes it one of the most modern museums in Spain.
MACBA is made up of an impressive architectural complex that includes a documentation centre, the old Los Angeles Convent and the main building, which has an exhibition area that exceeds 14,000 square meters and that was designed by the famous American architect Richard Meier.
The bold architectural design of the main building, strongly influenced by the style of Le Corbusier, links the adjacent buildings through reflective materials and glass skylights. This serves as a means of uniting the contemporary with the old, employing a mixture of straight and curved lines with natural light as an integral element.
MACBA has an impressive collection of contemporary art that exceeds 5,000 pieces from the mid-20th century to the present. Among the collections, important artistic movements stand out, such as material abstraction developed throughout the 1950s, the important movement of European Pop Art and the avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s, and the figurative photographic stage and minimalist sculpture that had a strong presence during the 1980s.
Among the many artists with works exhibited at MACBA, some of the most prominent are Xavier Miserachs, Bruce Nauman, Antoni Muntadas and Cristina Iglesias.
