The Blau Museum is how the enormous architectural complex that includes the current Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona, which was originally founded in 1882, is popularly known. In 2011, it was expanded into other locations throughout the city: the Martorell Museum, the Castle of the Three Dragons, the Montjuic Botanical Gardens and the Forum Building.
Since 1882, the museum has housed huge collections from different areas of the natural sciences, including botany, archaeology, zoology and geology. This makes it the first museum dedicated to the natural sciences in the city. At first it was called the Martorell Museum, in honour of Francesc Martorell, an important Barcelona merchant and patron of the museum.
In 1930, the first botanical garden in the city, called the Historical Botanical Garden of Barcelona, was inaugurated. It would be followed by the Botanical Garden in 1999. Later, the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Forum Building were inaugurated in 2008. All these institutions merged with the museum over the years, creating a large institutional complex.
In 2011, the area assigned to the Forum Building was baptized as the Blau Museum. In 2015, it was officially designated as the new headquarters of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona, which brought together the entire architectural complex.
Although its official name remains the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona, since 2017 it has been popularly known simply as the Blau Museum.
