The San Jose Market, better known as the Boqueria Market, was founded in 1840 and is located on Las Ramblas. It is the largest and most assorted municipal market in all of Catalonia as well as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Barcelona.
La Boqueria extends over more than 2,500 square meters, with more than 300 stalls offering a huge variety of products, both local and foreign, ranging from a wide range of gastronomic ingredients to high-tech products.
Before its inauguration, in the mid-19th century, there was already a wide variety of street vendors on the Boqueria esplanade who offered their products on weekends just outside the fortified walls to avoid paying the required taxes.
With the arrival of the 20th century, it was evident that Las Ramblas had become the most important promenade in the city. That is why the Boqueria Market began to gain popularity by gathering a greater variation in merchandise and attracting large numbers of tourists.
At that time, the market was located in a space between the trees and the houses, with well-differentiated sectors according to the products for sale. This gradually expanded in both width and length.
It is worth noting a curious custom in which many vendors used to give a flower as a gift with the purchase of a certain gastronomic item. This later became the representative symbol of the group of florists on Las Ramblas.
