Located between the rocks of the Concha Bay break, at the end of the popular Ondarreta Beach, is the Peine del Viento. It is one of the most interesting and emblematic artistic attractions in San Sebastian and has become a mandatory stop for all tourists arriving in the city.
The Peine del Viento is a curious sculptural group made of steel weighing about 10 tons embedded between the rocks. It was created in 1977 by the famous artist Eduardo Chillida, based on a work by the Basque architect Luis Peña Ganchegui. Its objective is to create a contrast between the solidity of iron and the strength of the waves.
To support Chillida's work, the area around Ondarreta Beach was conditioned in such a way that there were water and air outlets; thus, when the strong waves hit the sculptures, they would remain firmly anchored in the rocks. The result was a visual and acoustic effect as if the water "combed" the rocks with each attack and created spectacular geysers.
The sculptural group's strategic location and unusual distribution have made the Peine del Viento a spectacle in itself, thanks to the beautiful force of the waves.
In addition to being a work of conceptual art, the Peine del Viento has been transformed into a recreational attraction, especially for children, who enjoy seeing the spectacular water outlets along with the harmonious acoustic effect that accompanies it.
