International Center of Contemporary Culture (San Sebastian)

The Tabakalera Building is an architectural complex of almost 40,000 square meters founded in 1913. It serves as the headquarters of the International Centre for Contemporary Culture of San Sebastian. Its objective is to provide a centre for the production of artistic works and offer a program of various cultural activities, serving as professional support for creators and artists.

As its name indicates, this huge and emblematic building was originally a tobacco factory with a design typical of large factories of the early 20th century. Its original dimensions were 26,000 square meters, and it operated for 90 years.

It is located on the beautiful Paseo del Duque de Mandas, which during the 19th century was an area of the city's high class. Currently, the area serves as a large and pleasant public park. The Tabakalera Building was the subject of a profound renovation and restructuring after its closure in 2003.

Both its enormous area and its excellent location allowed the industrial complex to serve as a setting for audiovisual locations, a sound recording factory and especially important artistic exhibitions throughout the years that its restructuring and remodelling lasted.

Since its inauguration in September 2015, the International Centre for Contemporary Culture of San Sebastian has acquired enormous fame and popularity. Today, it is an authentic artistic and cultural epicentre of the Basque Country where festivals, exhibitions and multiple artistic events have been held.
