Miramar Palace, also known as the Royal Palace, is a magnificent English-style mansion built in 1893 by the famous architect José Goicoa based on a design by the English architect Ralph Selden Wornum. It is considered one of the city's most interesting architectural heritage sites.
The origin of this imposing building dates back to the mid-19th century, when then-Queen Isabella II travelled to this city during the summers. This made the city enormously popular among the aristocracy of the time, turning San Sebastian into a summer tourist destination and leading to the construction of lavish hotels and homes, including this beautiful palace.
With an eminently English architectural style, Miramar Palace was renovated to accommodate modern services, but it still maintains decorative elements typical of the neo-Gothic. It also has noble areas inside, such as the Music Room, the White Room, the Petit Hall, the Royal Dining Room and the lavish Library.
The last significant restoration occurred in 2007, when the splendour of its façade and entire exterior was completely recovered. In addition, teaching rooms for Musikene were built.
It should be noted that Miramar Palace is widely used for celebrations and events of great importance. It is the headquarters of the world-famous San Sebastian Film Festival, which welcomes great filmmakers and transforms the city into an important tourist and artistic epicentre every year.
