Kursaal Auditorium is a modern and spectacular architectural complex inaugurated in 1999 that has a series of rooms, both exhibition and multipurpose, and an auditorium for important artistic and cultural events. In particular, it is the headquarters for the main event of the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Kursaal Auditorium, whose etymology comes from an architectural term widely used in 19th-century spas in central Europe, was conceived and designed by the famous architect Rafael Moneo. Its design takes advantage of two large cubic volumes that seem to emerge from a platform as if they were a prism thanks to its pressed glass panels.
Due to its strategic location, Kursaal Auditorium offers a splendid view of Zurriola Beach. Moneo's architectural design is nourished by these cubic spaces, which form a vast walkable surface ideal for concerts or musical events, such as the popular San Sebastian Jazz Festival.
The auditorium consists of two areas: a simple one without an orchestra pit and a simple stage area. The aim is to magnify the presence of the musicians on stage and improve the acoustics, which are ideal for small operatic events. The auditorium's capacity is just over 1,800 spectators.
The second area is used for more ambitious events. Here, the front part of the stage can be lowered, and a creative system of side curtains is used to modify the venue's acoustics.
