With a size exceeding 5,000 square meters, Guipuzkoa Square is one of the most popular rest and meeting places in San Sebastian. It is ideal for couples and families, especially children. Visitors can feed the ducks or swans in its beautiful pond or enjoy its immense green areas.
Located in the heart of San Sebastian, between Bengoetxea and Andia streets, Guipuzkoa Square is a porticoed area made of ashlar stone in a Neoclassical style. It is irregularly rectangular and was designed by José Eleuterio Escoriaza. Its construction lasted between 1867 and 1882.
Originally, Escoriaza's design envisaged closing all the doors that gave access to the square. However, that idea was discarded to give it greater prominence and spaciousness towards other busy and popular areas such as the Maritime Promenade and the most aristocratic area, where the Grand Casino and many large palaces and mansions would later be built.
Without a doubt, the highlight of this beautiful square is its magnificent and superb gardens, which are the work of the famous French designer Pierre Ducasse. He was also responsible for the spectacular gardens of Aiete Palace.
As an interesting detail, Guipuzkoa Square was the first public park built explicitly for the city of San Sebastian and whose first projects were born during the "Ensanche."
Currently, Guipuzkoa Square is considered one of the most peaceful and striking recreational and leisure areas in San Sebastian.
