The Church of St. Michael, located on the street of the same name, is one of the oldest churches in Palma de Mallorca. It was built on an old mosque during the 13th century and was expanded over the centuries until it was proclaimed a minor basilica in 2018.
During the 14th century, the most important church of the architectural complex was built, with an unmistakable Gothic style. It consisted of a single nave, a series of side chapels and a bell tower with a square base. During the 17th century, it was expanded and renovated in a modern Baroque style.
The façade is preserved in its Gothic style, the work of the famous sculptor Pere de Sant Joan, who began it in 1398. The sculpture in its upper left part is the work of Ramón Llull. A representation of the Virgin with the Child stands out, as does the bell tower topped with a typically Majorcan pyramidal structure.
Of its Baroque details, a spectacular altarpiece made by Francisco Herrera stands out. It represents St. Michael defeating the devil. In addition, there are representations of the archangels St. Raphael and St. Gabriel.
Also noteworthy is the beautiful Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary of Health, patroness saint of the city, who, according to tradition, came on the galley of King Jaime I in the 13th century.
It is a monumental temple with enormous traditional and cultural significance in Palma de Mallorca. For that reason, it receives a huge number of faithful and attracts many tourists who admire its spectacular nature and beauty.
