The Almudaina Royal Palace, also called the Royal Alcázar, was the official residence of Jaime II of Mallorca. Later, it was the official residence of the Mallorcan, Aragonese and Spanish monarchs.
Rebuilt in 1309 by order of Jaime II on an ancient Roman castle, the Almudaina presents a design that includes a Medieval-style ground floor containing beautiful artistic decorations ranging from the 15th century to the 20th century and an upper floor where official events were held. It is profusely decorated with furniture and objects from other royal residences from the 17th to 19th centuries.
La Almudaina was the residence of the Mallorcan kingdom throughout the first half of the 14th century, when it established itself as one of the most prosperous and important Mediterranean kingdoms. It passed into the hands of the Crown of Aragon in 1349.
In the 16th century, the palace was renovated to include the upper floor. Charles I was the last monarch to visit it until it accommodated Isabel II and her heirs in September 1860.
Like the Orient Palace in Madrid, the Almudaina Royal Palace is the official residence of the King of Spain during the summer months.
Due to its spectacular beauty and immense heritage and cultural value, the Almudaina Royal Palace is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Palma de Mallorca. It is also of great interest among academics and students due to its architectural and artistic wealth.
