The Museum of Contemporary Art of Leon, popularly known by its acronym MUSAC, opened in 2005 and was designed to serve as a modern museum institution for the 21st century. It displays various pieces of art from Leon and Spain as a whole.
The museum was designed by the architectural studio Mansilla & Tuñón with a bold and modern vision. Its style has generated recognition worldwide, including the Mies van der Rohe Prize for Contemporary Architecture.
Located in the Eras de Renueva neighbourhood, the museum is situated in a very modern and dynamic area of Leon where other cultural centres, such as the Leon Auditorium, operate. Its purpose is to contribute to that advanced vision, on both artistic and figurative levels, and thereby have a great impact on the public.
The Mansilla & Tuñón Arquitectos studio also created the modern and bold cubist design of the auditorium, using its global vision to bring Leonese art and culture to 21st-century levels and enabling it to compete with other museums of great world renown, such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
The MUSAC is managed by the Siglo Foundation for the Arts of the Government of Castile and Leon, which maintains an interesting museum network including the Steel and Mining Museum, located in Sabero (Leon), the Ethnographic Museum of Castile and Leon, located in Zamora, and the Museum of Human Evolution, located in Burgos.
