The ruins of the Convent of St. Francis in Burgos are silent witnesses to a history dating back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it underwent various modifications and extensions to adapt to needs and stylistic changes.

This is not documented, but tradition says that it was founded by St. Francis of Assisi himself in the year 1213. The convent complex included a church, a cloister, rooms for the friars and service areas. The religious temple was in the Gothic style, with a single nave and a simple but elegant façade. Inside, it housed altarpieces, chapels and works of art.

Centuries ago, the convent played a prominent role in the religious and cultural life of Burgos, as the Franciscans were active in the community, devoting themselves to preaching, caring for the poor and teaching.

However, history changed drastically in the 19th century, first due to the serious damage that the monastery suffered during the War of Independence and later with the confiscation of ecclesiastical assets carried out by the Spanish government. In 1836 the monastery was confiscated and the friars were expelled. From that moment on, it was abandoned.

Over time, much of the convent was destroyed or looted, leaving only the ruins of what was once an important religious centre. The ruins of the Convent of St. Francis are a tangible testimony to the history of Burgos and reflect the political and social changes that affected the religious orders during the 19th century in Spain.

Although in a state of disrepair, the ruins remain a place of interest for visitors and a showcase of the city's rich cultural heritage. Currently, there are only the remains of a sepulchre and one of the walls, allowing visitors to appreciate their architectural beauty and remember their historical importance.
