One of the oldest and most appreciated monuments dedicated to Cid Campeador is the famous Solar del Cid, the work of the famous artist José Cortés del Valle. It was created in 1784 and is doubly important, both for its artistic value and because, according to popular tradition, it was the place of residence of the legendary hero of the reconquest.
The Solar del Cid is a very simple monument but full of history. It is tiled, and in the centre is a high pedestal on which three monoliths rest. On one is the heraldry of Burgos, on another is the heraldry of San Pedro de Cardeña and on the central monolith is a commemorative legend in honour of El Cid.
Although the immense influence that El Cid had on the city is indisputable, there are still many discussions and studies that question whether this was the place of residence of Cid Campeador because, due to its location during the 11th century, it must have been part of the Jewish aljama.
Other scholars maintain that the true historical value of the site resides in the fact that it was expressly mentioned in the “Cantar de mio Cid” as a key place in his legend.
Whether or not it was the actual place of his residence, the Solar del Cid is one of the simplest and most beloved monuments in Burgos. It attracts the largest number of tourists each year and, due to its antiquity and immense heritage value, is one of the treasures emblematic of the city.
