Inaugurated in 2004 as part of the La Caixa Foundation, CosmoCaixa is a Barcelona museum dedicated exclusively to science. It replaced the old Science Museum in 1981.
The museum headquarters is a spectacular modernist-style building dating from 1909, the work of the famous architect Josep Doménech i Estapá. After serving for many years as an asylum for the blind, it was acquired and remodelled by the La Caixa Foundation to serve as the headquarters for the new scientific museum of Barcelona.
Its architectural design is based on glass and steel. Natural lighting is an important part of the immense exhibition areas, which exceed 50,000 square meters and quadrupled the size of the previous museum.
It has nine exhibition floors, of which six are underground but receive natural light. In addition, it has a beautiful public square.
The museum is made up of various exhibition spaces including the Universe Room, which offers an interactive tour from the Big Bang explosion to the human mind itself. The three areas of the Universe Room are Kosmos, Evolution and Frontiers, all of which expose a lot of spatial knowledge.
The Flooded Forest is a space that reveals the immense natural beauty of the Amazon and its spectacular environmental richness. It is also made up of three areas: Underground, In the Water and From the Air. These areas promote awareness of environmental preservation.
Other spaces are The Geological Wall and The Planetarium, where knowledge about terrestrial geology and the solar system is exhibited and disseminated. A spectacular and innovative projection system covers the entire dome of the museum.
It should be noted that the European Museum Forum recognized CosmoCaixa as one of the most innovative and important museums in all of Europe.
